The mountain world

You can explore the area on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback by following one of the many routes marked out by the département council and local government.

The hiking route to Col de Mariaud (1 hour 15 minutes) starts directly outside our guest house. Alternatively, head up to the pastures towards the chalets of Valpousane. Another trail leads to Prads Haute-Bléone and along the Chemin de l’Instituteur (Teacher’s Trail).

You can set off at any time with an IGN map and information from the L’inattendu team and the library, or book a tour guide to accompany you on your hike or mountain bike tour. The team from the Ecuries du Vernet stables is also available as escorts for horse rides.

Haute-Provence’s landscapes are one of the region’s best-kept secrets, and a boon to photographers wanting to get closer to nature from 600m to 2800m above sea level.

L’Inattendu organizes photography exhibitions and invites photographer Luc Pagès to run workshops on the mountainscape and minerals.

– Photo workshop 1 – From detail to the bigger picture The idea and concept of the monumental in landscape photography  Landscape photography: specific to North America? From landscape to detail: rediscover the minerals and landscapes of the Haute-Provence UNESCO Geopark from a photographic perspective.

– Photo workshop 2 – ‘Alexandra David-Néel and her Little Tibet’ Embark on a journey of discovery through the ‘Little Tibet’ of Orientalist and explorer Alexandra David-Néel, who lived in Digne-les-Bains. Take snapshots of geological processes and focus on the infinite nature of the formation of the Alps as you wander through the Bès Valley and the steep slopes of the Monges and La Blanche mountain ranges. Interpretation of a landscape shrouded in mysticism.

– Photo workshop 3 – ‘From brittle to hard’ A graphic and aesthetic examination of geological materials, from limestone cliffs left behind as the remnants of a long-disappeared ocean to brittle black marl from the seabed and the red sandstone of a tropical coastline.

• Practical information

The workshops include three days of accommodation with board and lodging in a high-quality guest house directly below the L’Estrop massif in Le Vernet, 1,200m above sea level.

Lunch is a picnic with regional produce provided by L’Inattendu.

Luc Pagès – Photographe

DPLG-registered architect and photographer, freelance since 1995. His passions include the wilderness, landscapes and geomorphology. He constantly roams the wild landscape of northern Scandinavia, the Swedish archipelagos, the Hautes-Alpes and the Alpes de Haute-Provence, and also enjoys gliding. He has numerous clients both inside and outside France (Fnac, Nikon Stockholm), has designed series for Ikea, and exhibited on the theme of water at Marseille-Provence 2013. He undertakes completely integrated independent projects and solo exhibitions as well as hotel design and decoration projects in Sweden and Norway. Luc Pagès is a committed European who spends most of his time living in Stockholm but regularly travels to Drôme, where he once planted almond trees as part of an energy self-sufficient housing project.
